Epic Games has announced plans to launch the Epic Games Store on iOS, along with the return of the game Fortnite to the Japanese market. The app store and the game are expected to be available by the end of 2025.
The decision follows the approval of new legislation in Japan, similar to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which allows third-party app stores on iOS devices. The European Union had already set a precedent for this change, with implementation expected to occur later this year.
Fortnite, known for its Battle Royale format, was removed from the App Store and Google Play after Epic Games attempted to accept payments directly, bypassing Apple’s and Google’s payment systems. The company deemed the 30% fee charged by the platforms to be excessive.
As Epic Games prepares for its new venture on iOS, other companies such as Microsoft and Sony have also expressed interest in exploring the mobile market.
