Google has voiced opposition to recent proposals by Epic Games, which request the court to implement significant changes in Google Play Store policies and the associated payment system.
The legal dispute between Google and Epic Games, known for developing the popular game Fortnite, originated from Epic’s decision to implement a direct payment system in Fortnite, allowing transactions in virtual currency without the need to pay the 30% commission required by Google. The case evolved into a jury trial, where Epic Games was deemed victorious, and Google Play was declared an unfair legal monopoly. The outcome of this legal battle continues to resonate in the technology sector and the mobile app market.
Google argues that implementing the proposed changes by Epic Games would harm Google’s ability to compete in the mobile device market. The company has also expressed concerns that Epic Games’ proposal could lead to the creation of a new global regulatory regime, requiring the court to continually manage a complex ecosystem of consumers, app developers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and service providers.
Furthermore, Google maintains that the proposal would exclusively benefit Epic Games while harming other developers and OEMs, limiting their options and reducing competition. The company has also warned that the changes would weaken the security and privacy of Android operating system users.
