NCSOFT sues KAKAO Games for plagiarism of Lineage W

The South Korean company accuses the competitor of illegally copying various elements from its MMORPG game.

NCSOFT, one of the world’s largest online game developers, announced that it has filed a lawsuit against KAKAO Games, another industry giant, for copyright infringement. NCSOFT claims that KAKAO Games copied several aspects without authorization from its MMORPG game Lineage W, which was launched in 2021.

According to NCSOFT, KAKAO Games is developing a game called ‘ROM: Remember Of Majesty,’ which bears many similarities to Lineage W in terms of concept, content, art, interface, and gameplay. NCSOFT has provided evidence that ‘ROM: Remember Of Majesty’ uses images, icons, menus, screens, and characters nearly identical to those of Lineage W.

The release of ROM: Remember Of Majesty was scheduled for February 26, but it has been postponed to March, according to the App Store. It is unclear whether the delay is related to the NCSOFT lawsuit, and it remains uncertain if the game will indeed be launched on the new date.
