Mozilla has initiated an investigation into the telemetry feature of Firefox for Android following reports indicating a potential negative impact on browser performance. According to preliminary information, telemetry is adding additional processing time, which may be slowing down the user experience.
During testing, it was observed that enabling telemetry resulted in an increase of 16.5 seconds in CPU time required to load the website on Firefox for Android. Additionally, browser startup showed a 40% increase in CPU time when telemetry was enabled compared to when it was disabled.
The identified cause of this delay is the way telemetry updates are processed in the Android system. Currently, each update is individually added to the database, and each one writes the entire database to the disk. Due to the extensive collection of telemetry data, a large number of write operations are being executed, affecting the overall performance of the browser.
Mozilla acknowledges the issue and is working to improve the telemetry feature. Meanwhile, it is recommended that Firefox for Android users disable telemetry in the browser settings to improve performance until a solution is implemented.
