The Fortnite Mobile game, which was banned from the Apple and Google app stores in 2020, has found a new platform for its players. OPPO, one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, has announced that the game is available on its OPPO app store in six Southeast Asian countries: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The partnership between OPPO and Epic Games can be seen as a strategy to boost the popularity of the game and the brand in the region, where the mobile gaming market is highly competitive. Additionally, it may serve as a way to circumvent the restrictions imposed by tech giants Apple and Google, which demand a 30% commission on in-app purchases.
Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, has been a vocal critic of the policies of these two companies, accusing them of monopolistic and anti-competitive behavior. He even filed lawsuits against both companies in 2020 after they removed Fortnite Mobile from their stores for violating their terms of service.
The outcome of these lawsuits has not been decided yet, but Epic Games appears to be exploring other ways to distribute its game to its millions of players around the world.
