The Epic Games announced that its digital store, the Epic Games Store, will be available on iOS and Android mobile devices by the end of 2024. The revelation was made during the State of Unreal event at the Game Developers Conference (GDC).
As a highlight, the advertising image of the new digital store features Fortnite, a battle-royale game banned from the Google Play Store and App Store.
Steve Ellison, General Manager of the Epic Games Store, highlighted the company’s efforts to overcome barriers imposed by mobile platform controllers, indirectly referring to Apple and Google operating systems. Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, did not attend the event as he was involved in an antitrust lawsuit in Australia.
With the arrival of the store on mobile devices, the Epic Games Store will position itself as the first multiplatform game market integrated with Epic players’ accounts. The company also plans to introduce self-publishing tools specifically designed for the mobile environment.
The revenue split terms of the Epic Games Store for PC, which offer developers 88% of profits, will equally apply to the mobile version of the store. This policy represents a competitive advantage over the usual 30% fees charged by the App Store and Google Play.
Furthermore, developers will be able to use their own payment systems for in-app transactions. Epic will also offer incentives such as royalty exemptions from the Unreal Engine for games published on the Epic Games Store and more favorable conditions for companies choosing exclusive launches on the platform.
